Me at 13 Months! (Can you see my two new teeth?)
It's crazy to think that Gus is already 13 months old. It seems like just last week we were celebrating his first birthday!
Gus FINALLY has two teeth! He cut the first one on June 8th and then cut the second one on the bottom today! If you look closely at the above picture, you can see the two little white teeth. They are tiny at this stage, and not looking like teeth yet, but in a week or so they should be more noticeable.
Gus is an amazing little man. We just love him to pieces and think that he's awesome. Each day he brings laughter to our home, and always does something that strikes us as funny. He has a sense of humor that's developing and he will always laugh if he hears us laughing. He's started to mimic things that we do with our mouth, especially clicking our tongues, or making funny sounds with our mouths.
Here are some of the things that we can expect Gus to be doing this month (and some of them he already does):
- Can climb onto a low ledge or step
- Doesn't like to be restrained- wants to explore everything
- Poke, bang, turn, and twist everything he can reach
- Can probably stand alone and walk well
- Loves to have people watch him and loves to hear them clap for him. He is beginning to do cute things just to get attention
- Sometimes show that he loves us by kisses and hugs
- Still needs mom and dad in sight when exploring
- Beginning to adjust to babysitters, but is shy with strangers
- Is learning simple words
- Can look in the right direction when you ask, "Where's daddy?" "Where's the ball?" or "Where's the dog/cat?"
- He will respond when his name is called
- Can wave bye-bye if asked
- Has begun to understand the names of some people, animals, and things
- Is learning what we will let him do and what we won't let him do
- Will empty anything he can get into- drawers, cabinets, trash cans, baskets
- Sometimes likes to put things back into containers (but enjoys taking them out more)
- Likes to imitate our actions
- Has learned how to get us and other adults to help him do thing
- If helped, he can hold a cup and drink from it
- Likes taking off hats, shoes, socks, and pants but can't get them back on
- Enjoys pushing rolling toys and putting things in piles
- Can play alone, but likes to play with mom and dad, especially the "chase me, catch me, find me" games and gentle rough housing
- Likes to "copy play" and will feed us pieces of food the way we feed him. When we accept the food, it makes him feel important and he will laugh and enjoy it
- Enjoys playing with mirrors
- Enjoys imitation games, but also enjoys building things with mom and dad and learning that things can be combined to make new things
- Has a ball knocking down anything you make with him while playing
Also, according to "What to Expect the Second Year" here are the things that can happen during the 13-14 month period:
Most toddlers will probably be able to...
- Stand alone
- Cruise
- Walk with help
- Take a few steps unassisted
- Wave bye-bye
- Put an object into a container (and dump it out again)
- Eat with their fingers
- Say "mama" and "dada" intentionally
- Follow a 1-step direction ("Pick up the ball please.")
- Imitate others (clap hands when someone else claps, for example)
Half of all toddlers will be able to...
- Walk well
- Push a toy with wheels while walking
- Pick up an object from the ground while standing (without holding on)
- Point to a body part when asked ("Where's your nose?")
Some toddlers may be able to:
- Pull a toy when walking
- Imitate with an object (use a phone to "talk" a sponge to "clean")
- Use a spoon or fork to eat, once in a while
- Drink from a cup independently
- Say three words (other than "mama" or "dada")
A few toddlers may be able to:
- Run
- Climb steps
- Build a tower of two cubes
- Match shapes in a shape sorter
- Say six or more words
- Follow a two-step direction ("Pick up the rubber duckie and give it to me please."
Of the above mentioned things, Gus is doing a great deal of them already, so we're pretty excited to see what else comes in this next month.
Here are some additional pictures from today:
See you Tuesday for more info about my week!!!
